IN THE WORD DAILY
with Brother Rick
Hebrews 8: 12, 13
For I will be merciful to their
unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
V- 13 In that he saith, A new
covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is
ready to vanish away.
In verse 6 of this chapter, we see that Christ
has become the mediator of a better covenant. This new covenant provides
something that the old could not. Where the old supplied only temporary
covering for sin, this new covenant washes our sins away. Where the old
covenant could not pardon, the new covenant completely pardons. Where the old
covenant gave hope for future forgiveness, the new covenant gives the believer
security for eternal forgiveness and freedom to live in this present world.
Jesus is that security, Jesus is that freedom. John 8: 36 says, “If the
Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
We see in this epistle that there are two
covenants that are addressed. One is the covenant God made with Israel when he
gave them the law. This covenant was the conditional and temporary Mosaic
covenant. The terms of this covenant were conditioned upon the fulfillment of
its terms. It offered life, but only to those who kept the law. It contained
Judgments governing Israel 's
social life. It contained commands which portrayed the righteous will of God.
And it contained ordinances, which governed the religious life of Israel . We also
place the old covenant laws into three categories; the Moral Law, the Ceremonial
Law, and the Civil law.
But the new covenant is
redefined in Hebrews 8: 6, the Bible says, “But now, hath he obtained a
more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better
covenant, which was established upon better promises.” The new covenant
stands in complete contrast to the
Mosaic covenant. Its promises are better and its terms are unconditional. The
old covenant was faulty in that it could not take away sin and it could not
give the guilty conscience peace. The new covenant gives power to the believer
to wash sin completely away and offers peace that passes all understanding. We
know that the new covenant was promised to Israel
and Judah , it began at Calvary and runs through the millennial age and
throughout eternity. But we, as part of the church, have part in this new
covenant, and we are recipients of the better promises that the new covenant
offers. We have begun to enjoy the new covenant now. Israel
as a nation will not reap the benefits of the new covenant until the Lord's
return and “all Israel
shall be saved”, Romans 11: 26- 27.
We as Christians are
enjoying three things that the new covenant offers. We have the promise of salvation. God
promises to save us from our sins, not in our sins. God promises to save us
from the penalty of sin, which is death, Romans 6: 23. God promises to save us from the power of
sin, and God promises one day to save us from the very presence of sin.
Secondly, we obtained forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1: 13, 14 says, “Who
hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the
kingdom of his dear Son. In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the
forgiveness of sins:” And
thirdly, we have the ministry of the Holy Spirit. God has put his Spirit in us
as a comforter and a guide through this life. John 14: 16 says, “And I
will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may
abide with you forever;” Jesus also says in John 14: 26, “But the
Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he
shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have told you.”
Friends, we are part of
something big. Its bigger than Obamacare. Its bigger than the Super bowl. Its
bigger than Super Ball jackpot. Its bigger than anything this life has to
offer.
We have security in Christ.
Does your life portray the security that Jesus offers?
Have A Blessed Day!!!
